March 1, 1919 is a very important day in Korean history. It’s the day The March First Movement started and many Koreans sacrificed their lives to proclaim Korea should be free from Japanese Colonialism. The Japanese unjustly and illegally occupied Korea from the late 1800’s to the end of World War II. Japan officially annexed Korea on August 29, 1910 ending the Choson Dynasty.

On March 1, 1919 Koreans from all walks of life joined together in the streets of Korea and publicly protested against the harsh Japanese rule of Korea in a well organized peaceful demonstration. They waved the Korean flag, something the Japanese had banded for years, passed out and read a Declaration of Independence drafted by 33 patriots. The Japanese shot countless unarmed protesters and arrested tens of thousands demonstrators all over Korea.

The Samil Yosong Tongjihoe or 3.1 Ladies Association is one organization dedicated to keep the spirit of the March First Movement alive. Click here for more...
